What are Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids?Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids are Polyunsaturated Fats, the "Good Fats". These are most often found in cold water ocean fish. Linolenic acid is the starting point of Omega-3s and is the building block for Omega derivatives DHA (Docosahexaenic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaaenic Acid). Omega-3s are called Essential Fatty Acids because they are required for the normal development of the brain, nerve tissues and the eyes. The human body cannot produce Essential Fatty Acids such as Omega-3s, therefore they must be consumed in the diet. Other dietary sources of Omega-3s are Red Snapper and Cold Water Ocean Fish. What is Vitamin D?Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble prohormones, the two major forms of which are vitamin D2 (or ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (or cholecalciferol). The term vitamin D also refers to metabolites and other analogues of these substances. Vitamin D3 is produced in skin exposed to sunlight, specifically ultraviolet B radiation. Vitamin D plays an important role in the maintenance of organ systems. Vitamin D regulates the calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood by promoting their absorption from food in the intestines, and by promoting re-absorption of calcium in the kidneys. It promotes bone formation and mineralization and is essential in the development of an intact and strong skeleton. It inhibits parathyroid hormone secretion from the parathyroid gland. According to some studies, Vitamin D may affect the immune system by promoting immunosuppression, phagocytosis, and anti-tumor activity. Vitamin D deficiency can result from inadequate intake coupled with inadequate sunlight exposure, disorders that limit its absorption, conditions that impair conversion of vitamin D into active metabolites, such as liver or kidney disorders, or, rarely, by a number of hereditary disorders. Deficiency results in impaired bone mineralization, and leads to bone softening diseases, rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, and possibly contributes to osteoporosis. Vitamin D deficiency may also be linked to many forms of cancer. Very few foods are naturally rich in vitamin D, and most vitamin D intake is in the form of fortified products including milk. GOLDEN-PREMIUM eggs each contain 35% of the Daily Value of Vitamin D (130 IU's per egg!). This natural amine is found in the lipids that make up cell membranes and in the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Adequate intakes for this micronutrient of between 425 to 550 milligrams daily, for adults, have been established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Each GOLDEN-PREMIUM egg contains 300 MGS per egg! Often found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, lutein is employed by organisms as an antioxidant and for blue light absorption. Why is Lutein important to the human eye? Lutein is found in a concentrated area of the macula of the eye, a small area of the retina responsible for central vision. The hypothesis for the natural concentration is that lutein helps protect from oxidative stress and high-energy light. Various research studies have shown that a direct relationship exists between lutein intake and pigmentation in the eye. Several studies also show that an increase in macula pigmentation decreases the risk for eye diseases such as Age-related Macular Degeneration.
